Meet Guignol
PARIS
25 January 2008
Have you ever heard about Guignol? Come from Lyon, this character quickly became popular with the little Parisians. Nowadays the glory of the puppet stepped over the French borders and Guignol is famous in the whole world.
The character was created by Laurent Mourguet, a dentist, who invented the toy in order to entertain people afraid of him due to his occupation. The puppet became very popular and the dentist gave up his profession completely concentrating on the shows. The performances gathered many spectators and the king, for fear of unrest and conspiracies, made them illegal. Anyway it only added to the interest of the public.
In Paris you can meet the funny character in various places: at the Jardin d'Acclimatation, the Parc Floral, Buttes Chaumont or Montsouris and many others.
A visit to the puppet theater is a nice family outing, which will enrapture both kids and their parents!

Louvre’s New Acquisition
Louvre
28 January 2008
Anselm Kiefer is a German painter and sculptor. He is one of the most famous but at the same time most disputed artists of the German post-war artistic scene. In his works Kiefer explores controversial issues and violates many taboos. Themes from Nazi rule are particularly reflected in his works (for instance this theme is addressed to in one of his most renowned painting - "Margarethe"). His works are characterised by a dull/musty, nearly depressive, destructive style and are often done in large scale formats. Besides they often incorporate such materials like straw, ash, clay, lead and shellac.
This autumn the painter was invited to work for Paris most famous museum. Kiefer's vast canvas hangs in the north stairwell of the Louvre's Ancient Egypt Wing (Aile Sully) and is on display from 25 October.

Creche de Noel at the Notre Dame
Notre Dame
28 January 2008
Notre Dame is the heart of Paris. It's not only a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture, but has also been Catholic Paris' ceremonial focus for seven centuries. The cathedral's immense interior, a marvel of medieval engineering, holds over 6000 people and has spectacular rose windows.
Although Notre Dame is regarded as a sublime architectural achievement, there are all sorts of minor anomalies, the result of centuries of aesthetic intervention. These include a trio of main entrances that are each shaped differently, and are accompanied by statues that were once coloured to make them more effective as Bible lessons for the hoi polloi . The interior is dominated by a grand 7800-pipe organ.
From the Advent to the Fete de la Presentation au Temple thousands of believers visit the Creche de Noel at display within the walls of the Notre Dame to pray and to leave their messages in the urn beside. About 300,000 messages are written every year in the period from 1 December to 2 February.

Alexandre Charpentier
Musee d’Orsay
30 January 2008
Art Nouveau explores a new style in the visual arts and architecture that developed in Europe and North America at the end of the nineteenth century. It was a successful attempt to create an international style based on decoration. The idea was realized by gifted and active artists and designers, who tried to find art, which corresponded to the modern age. That was a formation time of what we now call "urban life". Old traditions combined with new, interweaving a wide range of contradictory images and ideas.
Among the artists developing the style was Alexandre Charpentier. His career was brief: there were just over twenty years between his first success at the Salon in 1883 and his last work in 1905. He experimented with a range of materials and techniques: plaster, marble, bronze, gold, silver, pewter, zinc, stoneware, earthenware, stained glass, mosaic, engraving, chromolithography, embossed paper, wallpaper, and of course painting and drawing.
The exhibition of his works takes place in the Musee d'Orsay from 22 January to 13 April. Don't miss the event!

New Vision
Musee d'Orsay
31 January 2008
Charles Sandison was born in Scotland in 1969. Now the artist lives and creates in Tampere, Finland. Interested in biology, linguistics, medicine and physics, he studies the systems they put in practice and their effects.
Stepping away from pure concept, he uses computer programs and algorithms to make a new language, a reflection on areas of knowledge, which he projects into darkened spaces. He transforms architecture, words, signs and images.
From 22 February to 18 May one can admire the new vision of the artist in Musee d'Orsay. As a basis for his flight of thought, Charles Sandison chose Claude Monet's Blue Water Lilies attracted by the aquatic immersion of the masterpiece.
