Photo Magician Of The Belle Epoch
Musee d'Orsay
01 February 2008
Leon Gimpel was a photographer and a pioneer of French photojournalism. He made photos, which were marked by the absence of "artificiality", popular in newspapers and magazines at the beginning of the 20th century. His shots were candid and informal, people looking dispassionately at the camera. Gimpel was very interested in technical progress and often implemented different novelties in his work. He was one of the first to present autochrome, the first commercial process for colour photography. He exploited its potential brightly, reproducing colour images of mountain landscapes, illuminated façades and scenes of Parisian life - in short, he glorified the dazzling world of the Belle Epoch.
From 12 February to 27 April Paris Musee d'Orsay is hosting an exhibition of Gimpel's works, which brings together autochromes, paper prints and plates used for projection shows.

Roaring Twenties
Musee Galliera
04 February 2008
Art Deco was a popular international movement from 1920 until 1939, influencing the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design and industrial design as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and cinema. The style was a mixture of many different movements of the early 20th century, including Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism.
The fashion was greatly affected by the new movement. Short skirts and bold haircuts replaced corseted and modest fashion. Post-war years were the time when women got more freedom and more rights in society, what found its reflection in the way they dressed.
The exhibition devoted to the "Annees folles" (Roaring Twenties) takes place at the Musee Galliera. The visitors have a chance to witness 24 hours in the life of a chic Parisian woman of the 20s. Haircuts, clothes, fabrics and dresses by the best designers, let alone photos, films and recordings of the time are on display until 29 February. Don't miss the exhibition!

Delacroix and the Companions of his Youth
Louvre
08 February 2008
Delacroix is one of the most important French Romantic painters. Delacroix's use of expressive brushstrokes and his study of the optical effects of colour profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists, while his passion for the exotic inspired the artists of the Symbolist movement. A fine lithographer, Delacroix illustrated various works of William Shakespeare, the Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott, and the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
From 23 November 2007 to 25 February 2008 the Louvre is hosting an exhibition titled Delacroix et les compagnons de sa jeunesse (Delacroix and the Companions of his Youth), which concentrates on the romantic period in the creative life of the painter. On display are Delacroix's own works as well as those painted by the artists he was on friendly terms with - Gericault, Huet, Barye, Bonington, etc.

Art Of Decoration
Musee d'Orsay
11 February 2008
Musee d'Orsay is hosting an exhibition of the interior drawings. The history of the interior design began in the 19th century when it separated into the independent branch. Heretofore the architect was in charge of both exterior and interior. Due to gifted and skillful people like Eugene Lami, Antoine Zoegger, Jules Allard, Charles Percier and Pierre-Francois-Leonard Fontaine, interior decoration began to be considered a matter of great importance. The set of the rooms, choice of colors, position of furniture and display of objects d'art became the indicator of good taste in the eyes of the European elite. At the end of the 19th century, the avant-garde movements highlighted the fundamental role of interior decoration, as a basis for renewing the environment...
The exhibition illustrating the history of the interior design is run in Musee d'Orsay from 12 February to 4 May.
