Not only the widely-known museums like the Louvre, Orsay or Les Arts Déco, but also smaller venues (Centre Culturel Suedois, Centre Culturel Suisse) welcome visitors to exhibitions and a wide choice of other entertainment: shows, concerts, cinema screenings, conferences etc. The highlights of this year's event are: silent cinema screenings of Keaton at Cinématheque Française, video installations at the Pompidou, the projection of Sofia Coppola's film at Grand Palais and much more.

Robert Mapplethorpe
Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac.
21 May 2008
Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac exhibits works by Robert Mapplethorpe, bringing together the portraits of four models that are often seen at his photographs. One of them is Lisa Lyon, the winner in the 1979 First Women's World Bodybuilding Championship, whose well-shaped body helped the photographer render the beauty of human nature, at the same time calling into question the gender roles and female stereotypes of the 1980s. His most favourite male models were Milton, Thomas and Ken. Some of their images are reminiscent of the classic antiquity sculpture, others remind us of the Mannerist art of the 16th century.

Born in 1946 in New York, Robert Mapplethorpe studied painting and sculpture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. His most known images portray black and white nudes, sensual flowers and portraits of celebrities and friends. The artist died of AIDS in 1989 at the age of 42. Exhibition at Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac is opened until June 7, 2008.
