Katsushika Hokusai
The National Museum of Asian Art Guimet.
04 June 2008
Despite the great influence that the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai had on European painters, this is the first time that the Musee Guimet in Paris dedicates a separate exhibition to him. Available through 4 August, 2008.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) is mostly known for two themes that he uses in his "ukiyo-e" works (translated as the "pictures of the floating world"). The first is the pleasures of the city nightlife: banquets, theaters, tea-houses. The second theme includes poetic panoramas, waterfalls, bridges and of course the renowned views of Mount Fuji, a considerable number of which are kept at the Musee Guimet.

The National Museum of Asian Art Guimet exhibits some 120 works that were created by or attributed to Hokusai. Those are his prints (nishiki-e), private editions (surimono), sketches, preparatory drawings (hanshita-e) and paintings (nikuhitsu). Among the highlights of the exhibition is the painting "Dragon in the Clouds" which matches the "Tiger in the Rain" (the latter loaned from the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Tokyo).

Sarkozy wants to change Paris looks
The President challenged a group of architects to think of a new urban project for the city.
05 June 2008
In one of the recent news about Paris we wrote that the city's La Defense district would get a new skyscraper. The latest news is that the President of France Nicolas Sarkozy seeks a new fundamental change in the city looks.

For this he challenged a group of architects, supported by engineers, city planners, sociologists and even philosophers (there are a total of about 250 people in the team) to think of a new urban project for the city boundaries, transport system, housing, business developments, administrative bodies etc. Sarkozy aide Henri Guaino comments that "The aim is to spawn a new city, like Baron Haussmann did in his day." The Famous civic planner Baron Haussmann rebuilt the capital of France in the 1850s and 60s. The project is set to be elaborated within 6 months.

Currently the city of Paris and the web of smaller towns surrounding it are run by separate bodies, which causes problems with transport policy and other spheres affecting the entire metropolis.

The store will occupy a 7,696-square-feet space beneath the Pyramid.
06 June 2008
According to the French newspaper "La Tribune", there will be an Apple Store opened under one of the highly visited spots of Paris - The Louvre Pyramid. The company has already got the green light to locate its first store on the 7,696-square-feet space beneath the attraction.

The Apple Stores are more than just retail stores, they are real showrooms exhibiting brand new computer and electronic products. The one under the Pyramid will be located on two floors, replacing the two other stores, Résonnance and Lalique. No opening date has been announced yet.

The large glass Louvre Pyramid is located in the museum's courtyard and serves as a main entrance to the museum building. The space underneath it is occupied by a shopping gallery which attracts 8,7 visitors every year. The new store will, therefore, be able to compete with the prestigious Regent Street store in London and the Fifth Avenue store in NYC.

07 June 2008

The world premier of "Melancholia" (libretto by Jon Fosse, composer - Georg Friedrich Haas, staged by the Opéra National de Paris) arrives to the Parisian Palais Garnier June 9 - 27.

The production is based on the book by the Norwegian author Jon Fosse which is dedicated to the late 19th century painter Lars Hertervig. His essay, however, is not just a biography, but an intent look at Hertervig's paintings and his inner world.
