When Legend And Reality Collide

MUSEE DE LA MONNAIE DE PARIS2007-10-04   One of the most interesting Greek legends, the one about Jason and the Golden Fleece, may turn out to be based on real events. According to the ancient story, the king of Iolcos in Thessaly was overthrown by his brother Pelias. Jason was promised to get the reigns of rule back if he brings the Golden Fleece from the faraway Colchide (modern Georgia). Together with his friends, the Argonauts, Jason sets sail abroad to seek the treasure. He comes across many dangers, overcomes many difficulties and seizes the Golden Fleece with the help of beautiful Medea.
The current exhibition displays a collection of gold jewelry discovered in eighth to first century B.C. tombs near Vani, Georgia. The archeologists’ findings let the scientists assume that Jason may have existed in reality.
This is the first time the collection is shown outside Georgia. So don’t miss a chance to touch the history…or a legend.
