The building is to be completed by 2015.
28 May 2008
In our yesterday's news report we wrote about the competition for the project of a new skyscraper in La Defense business district in Paris. The results of the competition have already been announced: the winner is the French architect Jean Nouvel whose project was chosen among the five finalists.

Dubbed the Signal Tower, the new building will comprise four sectors resembling stacked cubes. On the upper floor there will be apartments along with a hotel, offices and a business plaza. Construction is set to be completed by 2015.

The architect Jean Nouvel possesses a number of prestigious awards, including the Pritzker Prize which he obtained in 2008. Another Parisian building designed by Mr. Nouvel is the Quai Branly Museum which was opened in 2006 (pictured).

45th Bievres International Photofair
Place de la Mairie a Bievres.
30 May 2008
45th Bièvres International Photofair is, as the name suggests, a photography-related event which takes place this week-end May 31th (from 2 pm to 9 pm) and June 1st (from 7 am to 6 pm) at the City Hall of the small town of Bièvres. Last year the fair was visited by more than 30 000 photography connoisseurs from France as well as other European (and overseas) countries.

The fair consists of two major events: the photographic exhibition with works by professional and amateur photographers represented, and the antiques and second hand market which offers rare equipment, books and images. Collectors and those simply curious are welcomed to the fair. The entrance is free. Bièvres is easily accessible from Paris - it is only 15 km south-west from the capital. For visitors' convenience, there are a car park and shuttle service provided.

Absinthe, the Green Fairy
Musée Montmartre.
02 June 2008
One has to admit that despite the devastating psychological effects that absinthe had on some French in the beginning of the 20th century, it has also greatly influenced many artistic personalities. Paul Verlaine, Charles Baudelaire, Toulouse Lautrec, George Sand, brothers Goncourt - all of them drank this herbal spirit, often called "The Green Fairy" (probably because of the effects it has on human mind). Current exhibition at the Musée Montmartre focuses on the drink, its production, rituals, historic influence and prohibition in 1915. The exhibition is a result of the collaboration between several museums, including the Museum of Absinthe in Auvers-sur-Oise, and Museum of Pontarlier. Opened until June 30.

The French Daguerreotype
Musée d'Orsay.
02 June 2008
In contrast to the calotype which was invented by William Fox Talbot and uses a paper negative, there is also another early type of photography - daguerreotype - in which the image is exposed directly onto a metal plate. Developed by Louis Daguerre, the daguerreotype is a negative image, which, thanks to the surface of the plate, appears to be positive in the proper light. Another feature of the process is that the resulting image cannot be duplicated. Current exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay looks at the aesthetic quality of daguerreotype through the various subjects depicted in the images. This is an excursus of the history, development and spread of the photographic method which is still practiced by some 100 photographers worldwide. The exhibition is opened until 7 September 2008.
