The Woman Without A Shadow
OPERA BASTILLE2008-01-15The Woman Without A Shadow (Die Frau Ohne Schatten) is a famous opera by Richard Strauss with the libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The opera wasn't a great success when it premiered in 1919 mostly due to the complicated and highly symbolic libretto. But now it is considered to be one of the best works of the composer.
Paris Opera Bastille revives Robert Wilson's 2002 production. The cast stars are Eva-Maria Westbroek as the Empress, Jon Villars as her Emperor, Jane Henschel as the nurse, Franz Hawlata as the Dyer and Christine Brewer as the Dyer's Wife. Conducted by Gustav Kuhn, the opera is a real must visit!

New Application For Christmas Firs
PARIS2008-01-21Paris authorities found an application for natural Christmas trees, thrown away in great amounts after the winter holidays: now they will be used as compost in the local parks. About 65 receiving points are open in Paris.
So far the major part of the trees was thrown out in the streets, from which they were taken away to the special places and burnt. Now the firs will be processed into mulch (a special composition for soil protection) and dispersed in Paris parks. This method is to be introduced in all 450 parks and gardens of the French capital.

Creche de Noel at the Notre Dame
Notre Dame2008-01-28Notre Dame is the heart of Paris. It's not only a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture, but has also been Catholic Paris' ceremonial focus for seven centuries. The cathedral's immense interior, a marvel of medieval engineering, holds over 6000 people and has spectacular rose windows.
Although Notre Dame is regarded as a sublime architectural achievement, there are all sorts of minor anomalies, the result of centuries of aesthetic intervention. These include a trio of main entrances that are each shaped differently, and are accompanied by statues that were once coloured to make them more effective as Bible lessons for the hoi polloi . The interior is dominated by a grand 7800-pipe organ.
From the Advent to the Fete de la Presentation au Temple thousands of believers visit the Creche de Noel at display within the walls of the Notre Dame to pray and to leave their messages in the urn beside. About 300,000 messages are written every year in the period from 1 December to 2 February.

New Vision
Musee d'Orsay2008-01-31Charles Sandison was born in Scotland in 1969. Now the artist lives and creates in Tampere, Finland. Interested in biology, linguistics, medicine and physics, he studies the systems they put in practice and their effects.
Stepping away from pure concept, he uses computer programs and algorithms to make a new language, a reflection on areas of knowledge, which he projects into darkened spaces. He transforms architecture, words, signs and images.
From 22 February to 18 May one can admire the new vision of the artist in Musee d'Orsay. As a basis for his flight of thought, Charles Sandison chose Claude Monet's Blue Water Lilies attracted by the aquatic immersion of the masterpiece.

Roaring Twenties
Musee Galliera2008-02-04Art Deco was a popular international movement from 1920 until 1939, influencing the decorative arts such as architecture, interior design and industrial design as well as the visual arts such as fashion, painting, the graphic arts, and cinema. The style was a mixture of many different movements of the early 20th century, including Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, Bauhaus, Art Nouveau, and Futurism.
The fashion was greatly affected by the new movement. Short skirts and bold haircuts replaced corseted and modest fashion. Post-war years were the time when women got more freedom and more rights in society, what found its reflection in the way they dressed.
The exhibition devoted to the "Annees folles" (Roaring Twenties) takes place at the Musee Galliera. The visitors have a chance to witness 24 hours in the life of a chic Parisian woman of the 20s. Haircuts, clothes, fabrics and dresses by the best designers, let alone photos, films and recordings of the time are on display until 29 February. Don't miss the exhibition!

Art Of Decoration
Musee d'Orsay2008-02-11Musee d'Orsay is hosting an exhibition of the interior drawings. The history of the interior design began in the 19th century when it separated into the independent branch. Heretofore the architect was in charge of both exterior and interior. Due to gifted and skillful people like Eugene Lami, Antoine Zoegger, Jules Allard, Charles Percier and Pierre-Francois-Leonard Fontaine, interior decoration began to be considered a matter of great importance. The set of the rooms, choice of colors, position of furniture and display of objects d'art became the indicator of good taste in the eyes of the European elite. At the end of the 19th century, the avant-garde movements highlighted the fundamental role of interior decoration, as a basis for renewing the environment...
The exhibition illustrating the history of the interior design is run in Musee d'Orsay from 12 February to 4 May.
